Ukraine Says Russian Losses Reach 1.45 Million Men

Ukraine's General Staff said on Aug. 2 that Russia has lost about 1,449,120 troops in Ukraine since its full-scale invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022, according to The Kyiv Independent.

The reported total includes 1,500 casualties Russian forces suffered over the past day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a Facebook report cited by the Kyiv Independent.

According to the report, Russia has also lost 12,231 tanks, 25,070 armored combat vehicles, 128,953 vehicles and fuel tanks, 47,196 artillery systems, 1,988 multiple launch rocket systems and 1,529 air defense systems.

The same report put Russian losses at 439 aircraft, 354 helicopters, 2,108 unmanned ground systems, 34 ships and boats, and two submarines.

Ukraine's General Staff has not disclosed Ukraine's own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy. The Kyiv Independent said independent Western think-tank reports agree that Russian casualties significantly exceed Ukraine's losses, with the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimating the ratio at "roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1."

A January 2026 CSIS report said Ukraine likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, including 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
