Iran Orders Swedish Diplomat to Leave

Iran ordered a Swedish diplomat in Tehran to leave within 48 hours on Thursday after Sweden prevented an Iranian diplomat in Stockholm from continuing their duties, Iran Press reported.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it rejected Sweden’s allegations against the Islamic Republic and condemned the Swedish Foreign Ministry’s decision. “The Swedish government, in an unjustified act contrary to the norms of international law, has required a diplomat working at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Stockholm to leave Swedish territory without any justifiable reason. At the same time, the Swedish government has raised baseless accusations regarding Iran's alleged interference in the country's security affairs,” the statement said.
The ministry said Sweden’s obstruction of the Iranian diplomat’s activities was completely unjustified. It said Sweden’s action resulted from influence exerted by the “Zionist regime” and was an attempt to disrupt the normal functions of the Iranian Embassy in Stockholm.
The ministry reminded Sweden of its obligations under international law, including the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It said Sweden’s action in disrupting the embassy’s functions would entail international responsibility and that Iran would take measures to protect its national rights and interests, including reciprocal action.
The Swedish ambassador was summoned to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday morning by Alireza Yousefi, the director general for Western Europe. During the meeting, Iran conveyed what it called a strong protest over Sweden’s “destructive policies” toward Iran, including its rhetoric regarding Iran and its hosting of anti-Iranian terrorist elements and groups.
During the summons, Iran said it rejected Sweden’s claims and told the ambassador that one Swedish diplomat in Tehran must leave Iran within 48 hours. The reasons were explained to the ambassador, but the statement did not specify them.
