Total Destruction: Russian Strike Hit Ammunition Depot Near Kyiv Homes

A Russian missile strike hit an ammunition depot near homes in Vyshneve, Kyiv Oblast, on July 6, 2026, triggering secondary explosions and extensive residential destruction, The Kyiv Independent reported.

President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Security Service of Ukraine said the site belonged to an enterprise under Ukroboronprom, Ukraine's largest state-owned defense manufacturer. Then-Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said on July 6 that 13 hectares of residential area were damaged, the most extensive damage to housing since Russia's full-scale invasion began.

Liudmyla Martynenko, head of the Information and Public Relations Department at Vyshneve City Council, said 253 private houses and 27 multi-story buildings were damaged, and 91 houses were completely destroyed. “The scale of the destruction is staggering,” Martynenko said.

Vyshneve City Council told The Kyiv Independent that eight residents were killed and 21 sought treatment at the city hospital, three of whom remained hospitalized. Local authorities said more than 600 residents were evacuated from areas near the attack site, including 117 people from a shelter near the epicenter.

Ukrainian authorities launched an investigation into who was responsible for storing explosives in a warehouse less than 18 meters from a residential house, a distance prosecutors said was prohibited by law. Anastasiia Mysaka, 21, whose bedridden grandmother died in a fire after the explosions, said: “It is important to me that those responsible face a fair and the most severe punishment provided for by law.”

Russia has struck defense industry sites in this part of Vyshneve before, including the Vizar machine-building plant on April 15, 2022, Ukroboronprom confirmed at the time. Russia's Defense Ministry said it hit the same plant on July 6, while Ukrainian authorities have confirmed only that the struck site belonged to a Ukroboronprom enterprise.
