French Representative: The World No Longer Listens to the US

U.S. representatives left a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine on July 27 as France began speaking, after French diplomats criticized Washington on human rights, Meduza reported, citing Associated Press.

The dispute followed a July 24 vote on reappointing Volker Türk as UN high commissioner for human rights. Türk won support from a majority of countries, including France, while the United States opposed the decision.

After the vote, France’s UN mission criticized Washington’s position in a post on X. “The U.S. used to be a beacon for the defense of human rights. That is no longer the case. Today they found themselves in line with North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali and Russia — isolated. And the world no longer listens to them,” the mission said in the post.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz responded that France was supporting “some of the worst human rights abusers.” He also said France was voting for a person who criticizes democratic countries, including the United States, Britain and Israel.

The clash between Washington and Paris is a part of broader disagreements between President Donald Trump’s administration and European countries, including over NATO cooperation, a reduced U.S. military presence and weapons in Europe, and Trump’s statements about seeking control of Greenland.
