Goa monsoon travel searches rise nearly 40%

Goa's tourism department said Tuesday that domestic searches for monsoon trips to the state have risen nearly 40% year-on-year as Indians choose shorter “micro-cation” breaks, The Economic Times reported.

The department cited Airbnb data showing Indians are increasingly opting for spontaneous weekend getaways and short three-to-five-day holidays during the monsoon season. It said Goa is strengthening its position as a year-round travel destination and benefiting from demand for short, experience-led holidays.

“Goa continues to strengthen its position as one of India's most sought-after year-round destinations,” the tourism department said in its statement. Travellers are seeking lush landscapes, local culture and slower-paced experiences during the rainy season, it said.

Tourism Minister Rohan A Khaunte said the trend reinforces Goa’s position as more than a beach destination. “During the monsoon, the state transforms into a vibrant landscape of verdant forests, cascading waterfalls, heritage trails, spiritual experiences, local festivals and immersive village tourism,” Khaunte said.

Khaunte said Goa is promoting shorter and more immersive holidays as part of a broader strategy to encourage year-round and regenerative tourism. The tourism department said Airbnb data also showed searches for non-metro destinations rising by more than 40%, pointing to demand for nature, culture and offbeat travel experiences.

Goa is promoting quieter beaches, its hinterland, wildlife sanctuaries, spice plantations, river cruises, monsoon festivals, adventure activities and boutique stays as part of its monsoon tourism offering. The department said couples, families and groups of friends are opting for shorter breaks together, while campaigns focus on eco-tourism, heritage walks, culinary trails, wellness retreats, adventure tourism and local cultural festivals.
