Six people killed in Michigan mass shooting

Six people, including suspected shooter Chad Hickman, died Friday in a mass shooting near Cadillac in rural Missaukee County, Michigan State Police said.

The Detroit News reported that troopers responded around 11:40 a.m. to a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township after a report of a person shot. State police said they found three bodies and one critically injured person, who was taken to a hospital.

Police identified Hickman, 39, of Lake City, as the suspect and said he had fled before troopers arrived. The search involved Michigan State Police aviation and canine units. Police found a fourth body in another Missaukee County home, then located Hickman’s vehicle and body in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township, about five miles north of the first scene.

A fifth alleged victim was also found in the wooded area, police said. The victims’ ages and genders were not released Friday evening pending notification of their families. Police said the scenes spanned at least three locations in Missaukee County, a county of about 15,000 residents 25 miles west of Houghton Lake.

During the search, state police warned that Hickman should be considered armed and dangerous. "If you see him or know his whereabouts, CALL 911!" the agency said. At 10 p.m., police still had LaChance Road at Rosted Road closed while they investigated the heavily wooded area.

Hickman had recently been divorced in a 2025 case in which the judge wrote it was "uncontested" that allegations of domestic violence on both sides were "at the heart of the issues before the court." 28th Circuit Court records show he was convicted in 2024 of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse and contributing to delinquency of children in connection with a 2010 criminal case, sentenced to 365 days in jail and ordered to pay $1,775 in costs and fees. The shooting was Michigan’s second mass killing in three weeks, after a July 24 case in Grand Haven Township in which seven family members were shot dead by the father, who then died by suicide.
