European Commission remains undecided on whether to join TikTok or not

Brussels is questioning whether or not the European Commission should open an official TikTok account, Politico Europe reported.
The question of whether the Commission should be represented on TikTok has reached high-level meetings at the Berlaymont headquarters. According to an official speaking anonymously due to internal discussions, at least one commissioner has called for a rethink of the current stance.
In 2023, the European Commission banned the use of TikTok on staff devices due to cybersecurity concerns. According to a Commission spokesperson, the ban also includes "personal devices enrolled in the Commission mobile device service,"
The Commission stated, "We follow the evolution of the platform, in particular the status of developments regarding data protection and cybersecurity concerns," However, there are few signs of a change in the current policy.
According to an official familiar with the discussions, the Commission's Director-General for Communication, Dana Spinant, is against creating an official TikTok account.
Some officials see it as a problem that Brussels is absent from a platform where young Europeans increasingly get their news and views. The debate comes as President Ursula von der Leyen and commissioners seek to reach more Europeans through social media; this month, von der Leyen is also inviting influencers, including content creators active on TikTok, to her annual speech. At the same time, the Commission is increasingly using the US platform YouTube, where, according to two officials, it has over 500,000 subscribers.
