Tech Titan Ordered to Pay Ex-Wife $644M in Divorce Settlement

A South Korean court has ordered Chey Tae-won, chairman of corporate giant SK Group, to pay his ex-wife Roh Soh-yeong 944bn won (approximately $644m) in a divorce settlement. Local media has dubbed the case the "divorce of the century."

This award is less than the initial 1.38tn won that Chey Tae-won was told to pay in 2024. The divorce proceedings began over a decade ago after it was revealed that Chey had fathered a child with another woman. Roh is the daughter of a former president.

SK Group is one of South Korea's chaebols – family-owned conglomerates that dominate the country's economy. The company owns SK Hynix, a semiconductor giant that supplies chips to Nvidia and recently made a record-setting debut on the US stock market.

Chey's lawyers stated that Chairman Chey Tae-won is deeply sorry that the divorce proceedings have caused concern to many people, and they will review the ruling closely to provide a specific response.
