Indonesian minister dismisses 13 officials suspected of gambling

Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman dismissed 13 Agriculture Ministry echelon officials in Jakarta on Monday after the ministry verified reports of suspected involvement in online gambling, ANTARA reported.
Amran said the decision followed a leadership meeting and continued with a review of investigation findings. He said online gambling involvement violated discipline and was a blemish on the integrity of the civil service.
“After the meeting, we took action against some echelon officials. There is no need to mention their names, just that they are officials. We dismissed 13 people for indiscipline and involvement in online gambling,” Amran said at a press conference.
Amran said all officials proven to be directly involved would be permanently dismissed. He instructed the ministry’s Inspectorate General and Secretariat General to immediately prepare replacements, and said civil servants must set an example for the public.
He said the policy was meant to reinforce disciplinary consequences and warn all Agriculture Ministry officials against violations. “Because I feel sorry for their children and spouses,” he said.
Amran said the dismissals were unrelated to an alleged corruption case and were based only on online gambling involvement. He said investigations found some officials had made deposits totaling nearly Rp200 million, or about US$11,000, and that the ministry’s performance would not be disrupted because it has about 52,000 employees and all vacant posts had been filled.
