SpaceX Wants to Use Rockets to Transport Cargo on Earth

SpaceX launched its Starfall demo mission on June 23, 2026, for a project aimed at moving cargo rapidly around Earth and to and from space, according to The Conversation.

Aerospace engineers Euihyeon Choi and Koki Ho cited a Federal Aviation Administration document saying Starfall has two main purposes: "to use rockets to quickly deliver cargo around the world and to deliver cargo to and from space."

SpaceX appears to be positioning Starfall as both part of a superfast delivery system and infrastructure for future in-space manufacturing. They said rocket cargo transport likely would not replace sea shipping or air freight, but could offer "ultrafast emergency transport" for critical medical products, disaster relief or urgent defense support within a few hours.

The article said a future orbital cargo system could move payloads between points on Earth and also to and from space. It said in-space manufacturing could interest companies producing pharmaceuticals, electronics or other technologies because microgravity and vacuum conditions, which are hard to create on Earth, may help applications such as specialized proteins or semiconductors.

SpaceX already delivers cargo and crew to the International Space Station, but orbital cargo delivery would need a different model, including the ability to launch without much advance warning. ISS resupply missions follow long, planned and periodic schedules.

The article also outlined challenges for SpaceX, including severe vibrations and high-G forces during ascent and reentry. "Rockets, by nature, aren't a smooth ride," the authors wrote, adding that "Operating a cargo network requires solving a puzzle with a thousand pieces," including launch and landing sites, loading systems and the number of rockets to build.
