Ukraine imposed new sanctions on Aug. 20 against Russia’s military-industrial complex, propaganda networks and other targets, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing four decrees signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
One decree targets companies and individuals linked to Russia’s defense industry, restricting 28 Russian citizens, 36 Russian companies and one Chinese firm. Some are accused of involvement in sanctions evasion schemes and the supply of high-precision industrial equipment, tools and parts, while others are tied to drone research, specialized military equipment and software for Russian security forces.
“We continue to systematically identify and restrict the activities of companies working for the Russian military-industrial complex,” Presidential Sanctions Commissioner Vladyslav Vlasiuk said. Another decree targets five companies owned by sanctioned Russian aluminum giant Rusal and nine affiliated Russian citizens, with the Presidential Office linking them to imports of alumina and other raw materials used in missiles, artillery, military aircraft and other weapons.
A third decree sanctions 45 individuals and eight entities accused of promoting Russia’s full-scale invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory. They include former Ukrainian lawmaker Yurii Ivanyushchenko, a close ally of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych and former member of the now-banned pro-Russian Party of Regions.
The Presidential Office said companies tied to Ivanyushchenko operate in Russian-occupied Crimea. Ivanyushchenko has allegedly visited Russia multiple times since the full-scale war began, maintains links to “Russia's criminal and business circles,” and is under criminal investigation over an alleged scheme to seize and legalize state-owned land.
Zelensky’s fourth decree targets the Russian children’s series “Masha and the Bear,” sanctioning five Russian citizens and four organizations involved in its creation and distribution, including Animaccord, its founder and CEO, and the show’s screenwriter, director and producer. The measures bar Animaccord from disseminating media in Ukraine and allow the government to block Ukrainian, Russian and English versions of the show on YouTube and other sites; the Presidential Office said it “spreads pro-Russian narratives disguised as children's content.”
