The Guardian reports that an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier is accused of killing 30-year-old Palestinian truck driver Ahmad Esleem while he was transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The incident has caused strong outrage among local drivers and threatens to paralyze the movement of aid convoys through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom border crossings.
According to The Guardian, the shooting took place on Wednesday when an aid convoy stopped due to a technical fault near Gaza in the al-Mawasi area, which is one of the key corridors for aid heading to Gaza.
Ahmad Esleem, who was from the city of Deir al-Balah, exited the truck, had allegedly followed all IDF instructions, and was wearing an orange safety vest when an IDF soldier shot him in the head from close range. Several eyewitnesses described the incident as a field execution, noting that Esleem, in their assessment, posed no immediate threat to the soldier.
The local truck drivers' association announced that it is considering suspending operations until the incident has been thoroughly investigated and assurances are given that aid convoy drivers will not be treated as potential targets. A representative of the association said that this was a field execution and the deliberate killing of a civilian driver. The driver, he said, was wearing an orange safety vest and had done exactly what the soldiers told him to do.
