A Guardian analysis said Donald Trump used his second presidency to grow his fortune, citing reported 2025 revenues of $2.2bn from crypto, Truth Social and other ventures.
Legal and ethics experts and congressional Democrats raised corruption and conflict-of-interest concerns as federal oversight waned. Trump made at least $1.4bn from crypto ventures in 2025, according to financial disclosure forms filed in June, while about one million investors in a Trump crypto scheme lost almost $3.8bn as their holdings fell.
Truth Social is promoting Truth API, a product offering wealthy buyers early access to Trump’s posts for $100,000 a month. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia urged six Wall Street financial trade groups in July to "not legitimize an arrangement that sells privileged access to market-moving presidential communications, especially for the president’s personal financial benefit".
The analysis also cited concerns over a justice department settlement of Trump’s $10bn lawsuit against the IRS over a leak of his tax returns, saying it gives Trump and his family immunity from IRS audits of prior returns and could save him $100m. Analysts were also troubled by Trump accepting a $400m plane from Qatar and by wealthy foreigners backing Trump family hotel and golf deals abroad.
Princeton historian Julian Zelizer told the Guardian that Trump had "figured out a way to monetize the presidency, political power and public policy in ways no other president has achieved". Trump has dismissed conflict concerns, telling the New York Times in January that he has a "very honest family" and had never taken his presidential salary; press secretary Karoline Leavitt later said he was "abiding by all conflict-of-interest laws that are applicable to the president".
The crypto details cited by the article included $799m in 2025 for Trump from World Liberty Financial and $636m from the $Trump memecoin, which he began marketing days before his 2025 inauguration. Warren and Schiff’s letter said a February industry report found $TRUMP and $MELANIA "erased an estimated $4.3 billion in retail wealth in recent months, with 2 million holders currently underwater", while 45 early $Trump wallets profited by about $1.2bn.
