Ukraine Needs €650 Million for Energy

Ukraine’s energy sector still has an uncovered need of about €650 million ahead of the heating season, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi said.

Koretskyi said the Ukraine Energy Support Fund has already accumulated more than €2 billion, but partners need to keep mobilizing assistance. “The pace of aid mobilization cannot be reduced. This winter will objectively be difficult,” he said.

He made the remarks during a meeting with the heads of Ukraine’s foreign diplomatic missions, according to the report. Koretskyi said Ukraine must not only restore destroyed Soviet energy infrastructure, but also build new distributed generation with partner support, Ekonomichna Pravda reported.

Koretskyi said distributed generation is more efficient and allows carbon emissions to be reduced. He also said some CIS countries could help Ukraine with railcars and locomotives amid intensified Russian attacks on railway infrastructure.

In June, Ukraine attracted more than €550 million in international assistance to prepare the energy sector for the next winter. The government plans to build 1.5 GW of distributed generation in 2026.
