UK Inflation Falls More Than Expected to 2.6% in June

UK inflation fell more than anticipated in June, reaching 2.6%. This development supports Prime Minister Andy Burnham's initiatives to alleviate the cost of living. The new prime minister has pledged to increase household disposable income and improve the economic outlook, announcing a winter VAT holiday on electricity bills and a reduction in the national cap on bus fares.

Last month's consumer prices index reading surpassed economists' forecasts of a decline from 2.8% in May to 2.7%. This drop was largely due to lower fuel prices, particularly diesel, aided by an unstable truce in the Middle East conflict. The Office for National Statistics reported that clothing prices also decreased month-on-month, alongside transport and food costs, offsetting modest price increases in most other goods and services.

Chancellor John Healey stated that the slowdown in price growth was “news families want to hear” but cautioned that “there is much more to do to give people the breathing space they need.” He added that the government has focused on the cost of living in its first week, cutting VAT on electricity bills and announcing a £2 cap on bus fares from January.
