Suicide attack kills 17 in Pakistan

The death toll from a suicide attack on a police station during a peace rally in northwest Pakistan rose to 17 on Monday after three injured people died, according to The Hindu.
Police said the toll from the suicide bombing included seven police personnel and 10 civilians. They said 12 injured people remained under treatment at Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital, including eight police personnel and four civilians.
The explosion occurred on Sunday during the Swat Peace Rally in Kabal town in Swat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Officials had earlier said at least 14 people, including five security men, were killed and more than a dozen injured.
“The explosion took place on Sunday when the Swat Peace Rally was in progress right across the police station in Kabal town in Swat district,” The Hindu reported. No group or individual had immediately claimed responsibility.
The Swat Peace Rally was organised by Swat Aman Jirga, described as a local tribal council. Participants raised slogans and carried placards demanding peace, and “alleged that police inaction has resulted in deterioration in the security situation in the past few months,” The Hindu reported.
