Iran Attacks US Base in Jordan, Seizes Oil Tankers in Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday it had fired ballistic missiles at a US military base and the headquarters of the Central Command in Jordan in response to US "aggressive actions". The IRGC's navy also intercepted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz that ignored warnings, the Iranian news agencies ISNA and IRNA reported.

In a statement early Wednesday morning, the IRGC said the attack was in response to the "aggressive actions of the child-killing US army".

The IRGC added that resistance would continue as long as threats against the Islamic Republic and illegal actions by US forces against Iranian interests persist. "The threats and illegal interference by US officials against our interests must end," the statement said.

Three oil tankers seized

In a separate statement, the IRGC Navy said it had seized three oil tankers that "violated our warnings and continued to sail on a dangerous and illegal route at the behest of the US".

Military spokesman Yahya Saree also said one of the vessels was attacked after it ignored repeated warnings and violated a navigation ban. Yemeni forces have previously stopped Israeli-related shipping in the Red Sea.

The IRGC has accused the US of numerous violations since April 7, when US President Donald Trump declared a unilateral ceasefire. The violations allegedly continued even after the signing of a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding last month, the first clause of which committed it to ending aggression.

US: Missiles targeting Jordanian base destroyed

BBC News reported that the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that all US ballistic missiles fired at US forces in Jordan had been destroyed. The US military said the attack took place at 5:45 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday. CENTCOM described it as an “attempted surprise attack.”

US and Saudi forces simultaneously attacked targets in eastern Iraq. CENTCOM said that the strikes targeted Iran-linked terrorists and several terrorist logistics and weapons sites. The US said the strikes were in response to more than 30 IRGC drone attacks in the past 72 hours.

Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday that its military had destroyed drones that targeted oil facilities in the country’s east. Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki claimed that the drones were fired from Iraqi territory by Iran-linked militants.

A day earlier, US President Donald Trump spoke of “very friendly talks” with Iran, but Tehran has denied that such talks are taking place. Before the pause in attacks, the US had bombed southern Iran for 13 nights in a row, where the US said tunnels and bridges were destroyed.

At least 624 US service members have been wounded since Trump ordered strikes on Iran in February, according to the latest Pentagon figures.
