French Firefighters Warn System at 'Breaking Point'

French firefighters have warned that the country's civil security system is at a 'breaking point,' particularly in light of the intense wildfires experienced in recent years. Michaël Pacanowski, president of the Spasdis-CFTC firefighters' union, stated that while the lack of resources is known, it takes fires like those currently seen to bring these issues back to the forefront.

Since the beginning of 2026, fires have been breaking out at an alarming pace in France, including near Bordeaux and just outside Paris, with a greater area burned than all of 2025. Commander Eric Brocardi, spokesperson for the National Federation of Firefighters of France, noted that pressure on fire stations has not eased for two months.

Sébastien Delavoux, CGT representative for the departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS), highlighted that due to climate change, the geographical area exposed to fires is expanding, the time window is lengthening, and their intensity and duration are increasing. This new equation has exposed limits in both resources and physical capability.

An A400M military aircraft has carried out its first firefighting mission in south-west France, BBC reports.

The aircraft has the ability to drop 20 tonnes of retardant or water and can reach vulnerable areas, the French interior ministry has said.

The ministry and French armed forces have decided to provide and equip the A400M on an experimental basis to strengthen the country's ability to fight forest fires.
