Steven Greenhouse: Democrats Urged to Highlight Trump's Corruption

Democrats should emphasize Donald Trump's corruption to maximize their chances of winning in this November's elections. According to Steven Greenhouse, Trump has shamelessly used his second term to increase his wealth by more than $2 billion, while millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet.

Trump's corruption and conflicts of interest are vast, ranging from making over $1.4 billion from crypto last year to granting pardons to criminals whose families have donated to his campaign. His sons' investments in start-up companies receiving help from the Trump administration have also been highlighted.

The US Constitution's emoluments clause prohibits presidents from accepting gifts from foreign states, yet Trump accepted a retired $400 million luxury Boeing 747 from Qatar's royal family. He has also pardoned individuals like Changpeng Zhao, who helped boost the value of the Trump family's crypto company, and Trevor Milton, who was convicted of defrauding investors.

The Trump administration has reduced regulations on crypto, disbanded its crypto enforcement unit, and terminated some legal cases alleging crypto fraud. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has defended Trump against corruption allegations, stating that neither the president nor his family has ever engaged in conflicts of interest.

Trump's repeated use of no-bid contracts also raises ethical questions. For instance, a secret $500 million no-bid contract was awarded to build the East Wing ballroom, and a $1.7 million no-bid contract was given to a business owned by Trump's ally John Cafaro for a water-purification system at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
