Astana Uses AI and 60,000 Cameras for Order

Astana officials said in a briefing reported that the capital is using more than 60,000 surveillance cameras, AI video analytics and waste-monitoring tools to maintain cleanliness and public order, Kazpravda.kz reported.

The information was presented at the Astana Communications Service by Medet Dzhalpybaev, deputy head of the city Department of Environmental Protection and Nature Management, and Aibek Akhmetbekov, managing director of the Astana Smart City Situation Center, the report said.

Dzhalpybaev said satellite monitoring had identified 122 unauthorized waste disposal sites in Astana. He said the department, police, the iKomek 109 service and district akimats conduct daily monitoring for beautification violations and illegal dumping.

Akhmetbekov said more than 60,000 cameras are connected to the city’s unified digital system, with more than 35 AI-based video analytics scenarios being introduced in stages. The cameras can flag pollution in public places, illegal dumping, vandalism, damage to bus stop pavilions and beautification elements, illegal trade and public-order violations. He said AI only identifies potential violations and alerts an operator, while authorized employees make the final decision.

The Situation Center integrates cameras, sensors and GPS systems used by utility services, and 18 emergency, utility and other services are currently connected to it. For the first seven months of 2026, 30,200 offenders were brought to administrative responsibility for violating beautification and sanitary maintenance rules, including 585 for polluting public places, 29,641 for beautification violations and 33 for dumping waste using vehicles.

Dzhalpybaev said Astana has a centralized municipal waste management system covering collection, transportation, sorting and disposal, with more than 200,000 tons of municipal waste removed in the first seven months of 2026. He said the city also operates a Waste Management information system that tracks containers and container sites in real time; more than 19,000 containers, 4,800 container sites and 116 GPS-equipped special vehicles have been digitized in the system.
