25 U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over new tariffs imposed on foreign goods. The states say they are renaming previously repealed import taxes.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the new tariffs are officially being imposed to combat forced labor practices in 59 countries and the European Union. The lawsuit follows a Supreme Court ruling that the administration did not have legal basis to impose similar tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
In response to the loss of revenue caused by the repeal of the previous tariffs, the administration is now using Section 301 of the Trade Act to justify the new tariffs, which range from 10% to 12.5%.
The lawsuit alleges that the administration has not provided sufficient evidence to support the imposition of the tariffs in accordance with the requirements of Section 301.
