Canada Ready to Intensify Trade Talks with US Amid New Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Ottawa is ready to deepen trade talks with the United States, following US President Donald Trump's order for new tariffs targeting Canada. Carney described this as the latest in a series of unilateral US trade actions that directly violate the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.

Trump imposed 50% duties on a wide range of Canadian products, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement. These tariffs also cover goods previously protected from import taxes under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement. The White House announced that the tariffs will go into effect in 30 days, allowing time for potential negotiations between the two countries.

Canada has made proposals to resolve the disputes and is prepared to intensify those discussions. The White House claims Trump is taking action to hold Canada accountable for its continued discrimination against and unreasonable treatment of US commerce.
